AIS students achieve top marks in IGCSE examinations

AIS student Van Duy Bao (16) has a dream of studying engineering at one of the top universities in the USA.

It is this dream of “aiming high” and a love of learning which has motivated this polite and well-spoken young man to achieve outstanding results in the recent IGCSE examinations.

Bao’s results are even more impressive, considering he has only attended  AIS for one year and one of his subjects (physics) was learned through self-study.

His marks included five A*s and one A for chemistry, physics, additional mathematics, English literature, global perspectives and economics.

A desire to get an internationally recognised education so that he could attend a university abroad led Bao to join AIS last year, bringing him one step closer to fulfilling his dream.

“I love to learn…I would love to go to Yale and study some type of engineering. But it is very competitive so I will have to work really hard this year doing IB (International Baccalaureate). At AIS, everyone speaks English and this is really important as you need to be able to speak really well.”

While Bao’s favorite subjects are mathematics (especially problem-solving) and economics, he taught himself the IGCSE physics course in one semester using the revision guide and past papers and googling anything he didn’t understand.

He believes self-study is important for all students to reinforce what they have learned in the classroom as this helps them fully understand the subject. And he says it is important for students to aim high: “Always strive for 100% as you really do have to work hard to get there”.

In his spare time Bao, who is the oldest in a family of four boys, plays football and designs and builds robots with his friends. Last year he helped design a robot whiach navigates people out of their homes in the case of fire and his group won the robotics competition.

AIS executive principal, Mr Clive Keevil, says he is very impressed with the latest IGCSE results as 30% of examinations were graded A or A*.
