Supporting Students to Achieve Excellent Learning Outcomes

At AIS, student welfare and safety is a top priority across all school levels, from Kindergarten to Senior School. In Kindergarten and Primary, dedicated class teachers as well as Vietnamese support staff focus on each child’s individual needs, fostering positive relationships and self-confidence.

In Lower Secondary, homeroom teachers and student welfare coordinators guide students through these crucial developmental years to ensure they can reach their maximum potential, with a focus on emotional resilience, life skills, and well-being. Senior School students benefit from a supportive homeroom structure, designed to help them navigate the rigorous IB Diploma Programme and prepare them to excel at university. Across all levels, AIS provides access to school counsellors and additional support, ensuring that every student receives the care and guidance necessary to achieve academic and personal success.

Well-Being & Character Development

It is no accident that AIS is known for the respectful interaction between students and teachers at school. There are specific student welfare classes scheduled for every year group across AIS to ensure age-appropriate learning that supports students' character development. Lessons in mindfulness are offered in Primary School, while cyber safety and appropriate relationships are taught in Secondary School homeroom classes. With the support of staff, students build the social skills needed to grow into emotionally intelligent leaders in their communities. The entire programme is designed to help students make good choices in life, develop essential life skills, and build respect.

First-Class Pastoral Care from 18 Months to 18 Years

AIS is very conscious of the incredible diversity of students in each academic stage, recognising the vastly different stages of physical, emotional, and mental development. Our school is committed to preparing them for success in a rapidly changing and uncertain world by providing the support they need to thrive at every stage.

Our students participate in both formal and informal student care sessions covering themes such as study habits, organisation, conflict resolution, decision-making, intercultural respect, strengthening support networks, and developing quality friendships. Additionally, building emotional resilience is a key aspect of student welfare at our school.

At AIS’s Kindergarten and Primary School, class teachers are the first point of contact for parents, providing daily support and care for each child’s individual needs.

Each Kindergarten and Primary School class also has a Vietnamese Support Teacher to assist students. The dedication, care, and compassion of both teachers and support teachers help build trust, integrity, and honesty, fostering positive relationships with other adults during their time at AIS. Should the need arise, teachers are supported by the Head of Primary and the Deputy Head of Primary School and Kindergarten. These senior staff members are responsible to the Executive Principal for both student welfare and the Kindergarten and Primary educational programmes across the Thao Dien and Thu Thiem campuses.

Primary School students also have access to the school counsellor, and those with additional needs may be provided with a special support teacher. Older students in Primary School classes are often involved in buddy programmes with their younger peers.

Students are supported through horizontal (year-level) homerooms, with a Homeroom teacher as the first point of contact for parents. Homeroom teachers play a critical role in ensuring a smooth transition for students into the early secondary years. They are further supported by student welfare coordinators for each year level, along with the Deputy Head of Secondary and the Head of Secondary School for more serious matters. Students also have access to the school counsellor, and those with significant additional needs may receive support from a special support teacher.

In AIS’s Senior School (Years 12–13), homeroom classes are arranged vertically, mixing Year 12 and Year 13 students to foster collaboration as they progress through the IB Diploma Programme. These homeroom groups meet daily under the guidance of their homeroom teacher, who oversees both formal and informal student care sessions. As in other school sections, the homeroom teacher is responsible for student welfare and serves as the primary point of contact for both parents and students.

Homeroom teachers are supported by student welfare coordinators for Years 12 and 13. Should an issue require additional assistance, the IBDP Coordinator, Deputy Head of Secondary, and Head of Secondary are also available. AIS also has an onsite school counsellor for support when necessary and maintains relationships with qualified external professionals, such as educational and social/emotional psychologists.

To help students navigate the rigorous demands of the IB Diploma, Senior School students have a dedicated area for private study and rest. This space is conveniently located near the student welfare coordinators, ensuring that help is easily accessible if needed.
