CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is at the heart of IB and sees students take on different types of new challenges to improve their organisational, leadership and risk-taking abilities. This month we hear from Nu Khang My NGUYEN in Year 13.

Many people struggle with their mental health conditions, yet the social stigma surrounding mental health prevents people from seeking adequate support.

This means there is a greater need for mental health awareness than ever before. Linked to this matter, the GIN (Global Issue Network) Bandaid group leaders and members organised a Mental Health Week that took place during the last academic year from Monday 26th to Thursday 29th April 2021.

The purpose of this CAS Project was to promote and raise awareness of mental health among our students as well as teachers within the school community. Especially as exam week was then approaching, students might have found themselves staying up later than usual to revise, their stress levels were higher or they were feeling on edge more often. With the help of our school counsellor, Ms Roberts, we provided an educational presentation with information about mental health available for all students and delivered this vital message during a school assembly.

We aimed to inform students about the importance of reaching out for help when struggling, regardless of whether it is connected with academic or personal matters, as our school offers great support within this department. Furthermore, the Mental Health Matters wristbands were sold to fellow students and teachers as a small, convenient and constant reminder of the significance of our mental well-being.

All proceeds were donated to the We Bloom Organisation in Vietnam for funding their mental health projects and community programs. This project not only spreads the word for students but also assists in breaking down the mental health stigma prevalent in our wider Vietnamese community.
